About the Artist: My photography is centered on the beauty and intricate patterns found in the natural world and in man-made structures as well. There is particular attention given to abstract forms in nature that are continually appearing and disappearing all around us. The subjects range from landscapes and wildlife to sand forms in tidal pools and details of a crumbling wall of an abandoned house.
My interest in art goes back as far as I can remember, and I began sketching and painting while in middle school. As a teen growing up in New Jersey, I spent a lot of time in New York City’s museums, especially the Museum of Modern Art, and I was very drawn to abstract expressionism. My artwork at that time (drawings, paintings, welded sculptures, and constructions) was influenced by the work of Joan Miro, Paul Klee, and Wassily Kandinsky.
After moving to California, I began to take photos on trips to the Sierra, Mount Lassen, Big Sur, and Point Reyes. Starting with landscapes and details of flora and fauna, my interest in doing photography as a way to express pure abstract form has increased over the years.
The scope and intent of my photography is natural rhythm, patterns, and color that show the interconnectedness of the macrocosm and microcosm; the photographs relate deep space Hubble telescope images to patterns in a 2” fragment of serpentine rock, and reveal patterns in rock lichen that evoke aboriginal sacred paintings.
