Artist Statement: I search for the light and how it interacts with the subjects I photograph. I believe photography allows us to reach the light that reflects off of or through objects. The film can teach us to see the things we do not see and to show us the things we have missed. This process of photographing the effect of light on or through objects enhances my ability to see greater depth and detail in the world around me. There are
two approaches I have used over the past several years. At first, I found subjects by wandering around, looking at what presented itself and rediscovering what already existed in the world, such as gates. Recently, I have been experimenting with fabricating and constructing environments where I can shine light through objects. The film captures patterns created by the light’s energy, producing mysterious and abstract impressions. I plan to continue with this method, as the possibilities are endless for creating images.
About the Artist: Carolyn Jones is a free-lance photographer who has traveled the western states, capturing
a diverse selection of scenes from the Olympic Peninsula to Baja, Mexico, to Colorado and points in-between. For the past several years, she has explored and studied gates, focusing on the light beyond the gate and the resulting reflections on the metal. These images have been combined with her prose to describe a journey of healing. The project has taken the form of a book entitled “Gates of the Heart”, which is nearing completion. Carolyn has recently begun a new series, “Reflections of Light”, which is the exploration of patterns and images produced as light is shined through glass. Her work is commissioned privately and is also offered in a variety of venues.
